Nah. Same thing as Irish Republican or Basque terrorism. It'll run out of steam eventually."

Re: Stockholm (Weekly Terror Attack Thread)
But if you're still struggling to tie it back to this attack, I'll explain further. What I think will eventually run out of steam, is this brand of Salafi jihadism.

Back in the day, the Israelis used to encourage Islamic fundamentalism because fundamentalists back then were mainly 'quietist' and didn't get involved in politics. That changed in the 80s, and especially after the Afghan rebels beat the Soviets.

Hence people like bin Laden left the Afghan jihad and decided to spread violent jihad to the rest of the world. Ultimately it culminated in the Taliban and ISIS. So really, this jihadi movement has been going since the 80s.

Most extremist ideologies run out of steam or self-destruct in the end. The Nazis self-destructed by attacking everyone in the same way that ISIS is attacking everyone. The Soviet Union collapsed after people got sick of living under its restrictions and the economy started declining.

Extremist ideologies decline becaus their extremist. They're cruel or crazy or violent. I don't see any reason why this cruel strain of fundamentalism won't end up in the dustbin of history like Nazism or Communism.

Re: Stockholm (Weekly Terror Attack Thread)
Hermit, I'm not sure that logical reasoning is your forte.

You said that the Basques and the IRA were 'blips' but that Muslim terror had lasted a thousand years.

I said that Muslims have been no more violent than anyone else in the world for the last few hundred years, and used examples.

My point was that non-Muslim cultures, like Europe, have been equally if not more violent over that period. I could quite as easily have used the examples of the rape of Nanking, Cambodia or Rwanda.

Understand now? Although I won't be holding my breath.

Seems like it's got no place in the BBC report of this latest atrocity either.

Re: Stockholm (Weekly Terror Attack Thread)
That's right Mike. The fact is that Muslim atrocities have only recently come to our attention because of our interest in oil. With less mobility Islamic atrocities only happened on a local scale so never came to our attention.

It's in the texts and Koran that Islam needs to convert or kill Christians, non-believers and other religions. The educated Muslims realise that was in their historic past but I am sick of every politician that miss-represents what Islam actually is. It is a horrible cult that has no place in a modern civilisation.

Re: Stockholm (Weekly Terror Attack Thread)
What has actually changed over the past 50 years is the ability to "influence at a distance", brought about, first of all by the ability to travel with one's beliefs, and more recently by the ability to send those beliefs around the world to anyone who wishes/happens to see/hear them.

Plus the technology to act at a distance (I certainly don't recall mobile phones being offered with terrorist abilities when they first appeared - somebody had to think that one up).

Physical borders have now lost their historic meanings as where in the past, influences were gradual (something like regional accents), now they are brutal, and diametrical opposites can now co-exist and change within hours, with all the tensions that implies.
